Despite the substantial contribution of Indian doctors to scholarly papers from the third world, Indian medical publications remain largely unexplored. An analysis of 75 out of the 113 reputable English-language periodicals printed in India revealed that only 8 out of the 22 items listed in the Cumulated Index Medicus met international standards, as assessed by both Indian and foreign referees.
