Once a car arrives at an auto recycling facility, often referred to as an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) in regions with strict environmental regulations, it undergoes a meticulous series of steps. The very first and arguably most crucial step is depollution. Vehicles contain a vast array of hazardous fluids and materials that, if not properly managed, can severely contaminate soil and groundwater. These include engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, battery acid, fuel, refrigerants from air conditioning systems, and even mercury switches in older models.
